On the afternoon of October 7th, one speech on Languages and CoffeeCulture in South African is held in the training center to celebrate the 60thanniversary of the Shaanxi Technical Collegeof Finance & Economics. This activity was organized by the InternationalExchange and Cooperation Center of the college. Yang Hua, the director of theInternational Exchange and Cooperation Center hosted the activity. The foreignteacher Lila gave the keynote speech. Some teachers and student representativestook part in the activity, totaling more than 50 people. The activity was dividedinto two parts. In the first part, students watched a video of the achievementsof international communication of our college in the past one year. In thesecond part, the foreign teacher Lila introduced language and coffee culture inSouth African to the students.
Lila's lecture was warm and funny. She introduced the geographicallocation of South Africa, which is located in the south of Africa. English isher mother tongue, and People in her motherland also speak many other triballanguages (more than 10 kinds in total). Lila also interacted with the studentsin English and Dutch. Then, combining the history of South Africa, sheexplained in detail the origin of coffee in South Africa, the development ofcoffee, the legend of Coffee Bay, the making process of coffee, the benefitsand harms of coffee to human body, the English expressions of common types ofcoffee and the differences between them. Students did a role-play exercise tolearn how to order coffee in English. Students responded actively, and theatmosphere was lively and orderly. In addition, the International Exchange andCooperation Center also prepared coffee and snack for students, so thatstudents could enjoy coffee and the speech about coffee at the same time.
In the end, Yang Hua summarized, stressing that students should lookat the world and set lofty ideals. Learning each language symbolizes a new wayof thinking. He encouraged students to learn a foreign language as well astheir own professional knowledge. Not only to be familiar with the professionalknowledge, but also to understand Chinese and Western culture, to be a"world citizen". Learning makes one progress and learning makes onehumble. He added that the center will do its best to build a better platformfor students to learn abroad and upgrade their academic qualifications.
